Maoping Travel Guide

Introduction

Maoping, locates 10 kilometers west of the site of Three Gorges Project (TGP) and around 50 kilometers west of Yichang. a newly opened port after the Three Gorges Project's diversion channel was dammed on Oct. 26, 2002, then all the cruise ships are prohibited sailing through the big dam. They need to find a place above the dam to load and unload passengers. That was why Maoping was found and a harbor was built. Eventually, all cruise ships at east end will start or end their sailings at Maoping before JulProtective Sub Dam, Maopingy 1, 2003, when the TGP's 5 level shiplocks are planned to be in use.

Driving from the entrance of the exclusive highway of TGP in YichangCity, it takes around one hour to reach Maoping, by passing the TGP dam area, XilingBridge and newly relocated county seat of Zigui. From TGP to Maping, along the 2-lane paved and winding road, it takes around 25 minutes.

Maoping was only a small riverside town three years ago. Now it is the new county seat of Zigui. Same as many other towns along the Yangtze River, after the completion of the Three Gorges Project, the small town will be submerged under water. The new resident homes, stores and districts have been constructed on higher site of PhoenixMountain.

 Now more than 30 thousands of people from old Guizhou Town have been relocated in newly built Maoping town, making it a totally new immigration area. Iit is expected that Maoping will become an important tourist site since it will be one of the best places to view Three Gorge Reservoirs.
