Chongqing Huguang Guild Hall

Chongqing Huguang Guild Hall Built in ancient style of Qing Dynasty, Huguang Guild Hall is one of the most interesting sightseeing spots in Chongqing. It was built by the people from Hubei, Guangdong, Guangxi and Hunan 200 years ago. In late Ming and early Qing dynasties, the population of the above 4 areas decreased because of war and disease. So the people immigrated largely to Sichuan province, building the Huguang Guild Hall. It represents an important wave of immigrants in the history and it has witnessed many events in China's history.

Located at East Shuimen Street, Huguang Guild Hall is the largest existing ancient assembly building in China possessing great architectural, artistic and cultural value. It is a classic example of an ancient Chinese Guild hall. The wooden building walls, doors and windows were delicately carved. The theme of these carvings includes human figures, and animals and various plants. It’s amazing that they were so vividly sculptured.

Huguang Guild Hall covers around 8500 square kilometers and contains many halls, meeting rooms, courtyards, theaters, gardens and rooms, served for business, entertainment, religious and social activities and as a meeting place for people from the provinces in the southeast and east. There are 4 towers for opera shows. The towers are still in active use. Local performances are shown here daily such as the famous Sichuan Opera “Magical Face Changing”. Its main attractions include Yu Palace, Immigration Museum, Guangdong Association and Qi'an Association. In 2006, the Huguang Guild Hall was re-opened for the public as a museum for visitors to explore the past Chongqing and appreciate. Visitors also can see and buy some local art-ware here.

Beside learning the history and enjoying the opera shows, there are many other wonderful performances and activities, including theater performers, musical performers, acrobats, photography, and tasting the delicious local flavor snacks while having a cup of tea at the same time. It will make you feel delightful. Many tourists chose here for relaxing. This Hall requires a ticket of about 30 RMB.

It's excellent nearby attractions, such as the Three Gorges Museum, the Great Hall of the People, and Chongqing Zoo, will make your trip worthwhile.
